INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Police are looking for a burglar on the city’s north side. Detectives believe the same thief has been hitting home after home, but this latest one may have blown his cover.
Surveillance footage shows the thief inside a bedroom struggling to get a pillowcase off a pillow. The thief then takes a pillowcase off a different pillow. The video shows the man going to a desk and then rummaging through a drawer and stuffing things inside.
“Several items had been taken out of the master bedroom, a lot of jewelry and some cash, totaling close to $20,000,” said Officer Jim Gillespie, with IMPD.
The thief allegedly got in by busting the glass on the front door.
“I think it tells everyone in the neighborhood that they need to keep their eyes out.
“It’s really bold to break into someone’s front door and the level of detail of grabbing someone’s pillowcase and going through someone’s belongings,” said Landon Lewis, a neighbor.
The footage shows the thief was inside the bedroom for about a minute and then he realized the camera was watching him.
“So immediately he goes to destroy that video but at that point the jig is up he is caught on that video,” said Officer Gillespie.
Detectives believe this isn’t the only burglary on this thief’s crime spree. In the past few weeks, police have linked this thief to at least five home break-ins on the city’s north side.
“We are making those connections through the specific details, using pillowcases off of beds and getting specifics items such as jewelry and cash,” said Officer Gillespie.
Besides the footage, detectives were also able to recover the suspect’s fingerprints at the scene.
“When they have surveillance video available it’s going to make it a bad day for the suspects we are going to be able to identify them pretty clearly on this video,” said Officer Jim Gillespie, with IMPD.
If you recognize the thief shown in the video, you’re asked to call 262-TIPS.
