Pool at northwest side apartment complex where teen drowned

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A 13-year-old boy died after being pulled from a pool at an apartment complex on the northwest side Sunday evening.

Shortly after 8 p.m., medics were called to the 5900 block of Deerwood Court in the Oakbrook Village Apartments on a report of a possible pool drowning.

Three men who were working on their mother’s car nearby, heard cries for help and rushed to the pool.

Two of the men jumped a fence, entered the pool,  pulled the boy from the water and began performing CPR.

Medics transported the boy to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died.

Police identified the boy Monday as 13-year-old Ameon Sow. His official death was listed as an accident caused by asphyxia due to drowning.

Witnesses say the pool has several warning signs that alert swimmers that there is no lifeguard on duty, specific hours when the pool is open, and that persons under 18 should be supervised by adults.
