Conservation officers investigating after Indy man dies while swimming in Putnam County lake

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. – Conservation officers are investigating after an Indianapolis man died while swimming in a Putnam County lake Wednesday.

Witnesses told officers that Rosendo Colon-Claudio, 20, was trying to see how far he could swim into the lake at Lieber State Recreation Area, when he appeared to get tired and disappeared under water a few yards away from the designated swimming area.

A friend called 911 around 2:22 p.m. and officers arrived to recover Colon-Claudio around 3:02 p.m. CPR was administered, but the he was pronounced dead on scene.

Officers are still conducting an investigation, but no foul play is suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
