INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A house fire on the southeast side claimed the lives of three cats Saturday morning, but rescuers were able to save one feline.

Firefighters were dispatched to the home in the 4700 block of Whirlaway Drive around 5:55 a.m. 12 IFD units and 2 Beech Grove units responded to the scene and were able to get the fire under control by around 6:21 a.m.

Battalion Chief Paul McCrary says the fire did about $200,000 worth of damage.

Fire investigators say the cause and origin of the blaze are undetermined.

One firefighter became overheated on scene. He was treated and released.

The owners of the home and their children were not home when the fire broke out. The cat that survived was taken to the vet by one of their neighbors.
