INDIANAPOLIS – Residents are safe this morning after being rescued from a balcony during an apartment fire on the east side.
Fire crews were called to an apartment fire the 7200 block of Twin Oaks Drive shortly before 3:30 a.m.
When they arrived on scene, firefighters say they found several residents on a balcony waiting for help.
Officials say a 14-year-old boy who was on the balcony jumped to safety before being rescued by crews.
Firefighters were able to rescue the four other residents, three women and an 8-year-old girl, who were trapped on the balcony.
No injuries were reported.
Two apartment units were involved.
Fire investigators say the blaze started on the lower level of the building. They say a woman fell asleep while cooking and woke up to the smell of smoke.
The upstairs apartment was occupied by a mother and son who are displaced.
Crews estimate the fire caused $150 thousand in damages.
