MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. – More than $14,000 was raised at a livestock auction for two causes that are near and dear to those at the Miami County 4-H Fair.

One of the causes is a scholarship fund created for a “4-Her” in the fifth grade that tragically lost her life in 2015 when a drunk driver struck the car she was travelling in. The Sara Herrell 4-H Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in her honor.

A member of the sales committee, Kelly Hauper, wrote a Facebook post about how moved she was when over $4,000 in direct donations was pledged for the fund.

Those at the auction also raised money for a 4-H member named Conner Gray who has been diagnosed with CIDP, Leukemia and HLH.

Conner wasn’t able to make it to the auction because he’s a patient at Riley Hospital, but his geese were there to be auctioned. To the surprise of many, a group gathered their money and bought the geese for a whopping $10,175.

Hauper says 4-H members also started to come up to her and other members of the sales committee to make contributions to Sara’s scholarship fund and to Conner. Some even contributed their entire auction check.

If you would like to contribute to the Sara Herrell 4-H Memorial Scholarship Fund or to help Conner, you can contact Kelly Haupert. You can also mail or drop off donations at the Miami County Extension Office, at 1029 West 200 North, Peru, IN 46970. You’re asked to be specific which fund you wish to donate to.
