Legendary NFL coach and defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan died Tuesday morning at the age of 82.

His agent, James Solano, said Ryan died Tuesday in Kentucky. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

Ryan, who is also the father of Bills head coach Rex Ryan and Buffalo defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, was one of the most eccentric coaches in NFL history.

Ryan coached in the NFL for 35 seasons.

He was a linebackers coach for the 1968 New York Jets, which is where he won his first Super Bowl championship.

He was also the Chicago Bear’s defensive coordinator from 1978 to 1985, and he coordinated the ground-breaking 46 defense for the ’85 Chicago Bears, one of the NFL’s greatest defenses. That defense helped the team get a Super Bowl victory, and he was carried off of the field.

Ryan was a head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1986-90, and for the Arizona Cardinals in 1994-95, compiling a 55-55-1 overall record.
