Peyton Manning says he’ll root for six NFL teams this season
THIBODAUX, La. – Peyton Manning won’t be in the huddle this NFL season, and that means he’ll have more time on his hands.
And it sounds like the future NFL Hall of Famer will keep his eye on several NFL teams. Manning told reporters at his passing academy this weekend that he’d be pulling for six of them.
In no particular order, they are:
- Indianapolis Colts
- Denver Broncos
- New York Giants
- Detroit Lions
- Miami Dolphins
- Houston Texans
Three of those are pretty easy to figure out: Manning used to play for the Colts and Broncos, and his younger brother Eli plays for the Giants.
But what about the Lions and Dolphins?
Those are pretty easy to figure out, too. Former Colts coach Jim Caldwell is the head coach for the Lions. Manning, of course, played for Caldwell in Indy. Adam Gase, the new head coach for the Dolphins, served as his offensive coordinator in Denver during the 2013-2014 season.

- The future NFL Hall of Famer said he’ll root for Colts, Broncos, Giants, Dolphins, Lions and Texans
- Manning has a connection with someone on each team
Some fans may raise an eyebrow at the inclusion of the Texans. After all, the Texans play in the same division as the Colts, and Manning routinely bested them during his career with Indianapolis.
The key to his rooting interest in Houston involves Brock Osweiler, his former backup in Denver. Osweiler left the Broncos after their Super Bowl-winning season and signed a lucrative contract for the AFC South team.
Manning said he’ll always be grateful that Osweiler helped him break down film and hoped he’d helped the young quarterback develop in his own right. He told reporters he believes Osweiler earned the opportunity to become a starter.
Here’s what Manning told NFL.com about his rooting interest:
“I kinda look forward to this year being a fan of a lot of teams, people that I have connections with. I’ll be pulling for Brock. Of course I’m going to be a huge New York Giants fan, but I’ll be pulling for the Broncos and the Colts. I’ll be pulling for Adam Gase and Jim Caldwell, the head coach of the Lions. Coaches and players I’ve played with and competed with. Being a free agent, if you will, this year, to be able to pull for a lot of teams.
