CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.– A 5-month-old boy airlifted to a hospital in “very grave” condition due to head injuries has passed away.

The baby’s father, 26-year-old Steven Filley, was arrested Thursday on charges of battery, aggravated battery and neglect of a dependent. Those charges will likely be adjusted following the death of the boy.

When officers arrived to Filley’s apartment Tuesday, Filley said he found the boy unresponsive. He told police he tripped and fell while holding the baby when he went to call 911. Medical experts said the injuries were not consistent with that story.

The boy was found to have severe brain trauma and a skull fracture, authorities said.

Filley was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $50,000 bond.

The official cause of the baby’s death is pending autopsy results from the Marion County Coroner’s Office. The results are expected to be completed tomorrow.
