Wayne Township firefighter accused of theft

Troy Wymer

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. - Hendricks County prosecutors charged former Brown Township Trustee and current Wayne Township firefighter Troy Wymer Friday for allegedly stealing taxpayer money while in office.

Wymer served as the Brown Township trustee from 2011 to 2014.  Court records state Wymer allegedly stole $9,739.50 in 2012 by writing checks to himself.

“The extra money he took was about a third of general fund budget," current Brown Twp. Trustee Tom Kmetz said.

Wymer spoke briefly to CBS4 and said the incident was an honest mistake and that he paid back the funds as soon as he noticed it. Kmetz confirmed Wymer did pay back the $9,700 on his last day in office in 2014.

"Just because somebody came and paid the money doesn’t mean a crime wasn’t committed in the first place," Kmetz said. "It was 26 months later so they looked at it as a crime of opportunity .”

Current township officials say they first noticed the error while reviewing records from the 2014 fiscal year.

"As the State Board of Accounts came in and dug deeper, they noticed that  the former trustee actually paid himself six extra payments," Kmetz said. "He put three extra (checks) in payroll and ended up reversing those with an entry, although the checks were still cashed, and then he paid himself three times as a vendor."

This isn't Wymer's first run in with the law. Last year, prosecutors charged him with domestic violence.  He was also arrested in 1999 for battery resulting in bodily injury.

The Wayne Twp. Fire Department has placed Wymer on paid administrative leave until the completion of this case.
