SALT LAKE CITY, Utah– North America’s oldest giraffe has passed away, according to Utah’s Hogle Zoo.

The zoo said Tuesday Daphne had just celebrated her 31st birthday, far beyond the average lifespan of 15 years. They attribute this longevity to the care Daphne received at the zoo.

The giraffe was found laying down, which zoo officials said was unusual for her.

“We’d been monitoring her for a few months and, as is often the case with animals, they let you know when it’s time,” said Dr. Erika Crook, Assoc. Vet.

Staff members made the decision to euthanize her.

The zoo said on Facebook that Daphne came to the Zoo in 1985. She was a mother to many calves and was also a caring “auntie.”
