Weekend motorcycle crash on I-74 near Covington ends with driver airlifted to hospital
FOUNTAIN COUNTY –Sunday evening just before 9:30 p.m., Indiana State Police were summoned to a crash on westbound Interstate 74 near the 11 mile marker which is just three miles east of Covington, on a report of a single motorcycle crash. The driver was airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.
Police arriving at the scene found the driver, Kaleb M. Copenhaver, 22 of Kingman, IN. lying in the median with his motorcycle lying in the eastbound lanes of the interstate. The investigation also determined that the motorcycle was going westbound in the left lane when the driver failed to negotiate a slight right turn in the roadway. The motorcycle then went into the median, struck the dirt ditch which caused the driver to be ejected and the motorcycle to go airborne. Copenhaver landed in the median and the motorcycle landed in the eastbound lanes of the interstate.
Copenhaver was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash with results pending. No helmet was in use at the time of the crash.
