INDIANAPOLIS — A day after nearly winning the pole for the 100th running of the Indy 500, Josef Newgarden was fastest during a busy practice session. The driver of the No. 21 car turned a lap of 227.414 MPH to top the speed chart.

“I feel good about it. I think our car’s good, we’ve been on a good roll this month,” said Newgarden.

Newgarden and the other 32 drivers who will start in Sunday’s race understood the importance of the three and-a-half hour practice session. It’s the final extended one before race day. Only a one hour practice session on Carb Day remains before the green flag drops.

“Everyone today was running around in a huge pack trying to figure out what it’s going to be like on race day. I think the best part about it was it was hot, track temp was up — very similar to what the conditions will be like on race day,” Newgarden said.
