INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 21, 2016)–Have a tattered American flag that needs to be replaced?  Here is your chance to get it replaced for free.

Girl Scouts will collect worn-out U.S. flags before the IPL 500 Festival Parade on May 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the top of the north steps to the Indiana War Memorial.  And the first 50 people who bring a tattered, full-sized flag for retirement will receive a new 3 by 5 U.S. flag.  Amazon Fulfillment donated the flags for the event.

Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, the Indiana War Memorials Commission, and the 500 Festival have again partnered to collect tattered U. S. flags for proper retirement through a local service project called Girl Scouts for Old Glory.

The public may take their old flags to the Indiana War memorial, the 500 Festival Building, or any Girl Scouts of Central Indiana service center throughout the month of May during business hours.

“The Indiana War Memorials Commission is honored to partner with Girl Scouts and the 500 Festival in collecting United States flags for retirement,” said J. Stewart Goodwin, Brig Gen, USAF (Ret), executive director, Indiana War Memorials. “This project will present several positive opportunities to Girl Scouts such as educating them on proper flag etiquette, learning more about the history of our flag, and the proper way to retire a flag.”

“Patriotism and service are at the heart of Girl Scouts’ mission,” said Deborah Hearn Smith, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. “This is such a terrific learning opportunity for girls across central Indiana. ”

The tattered flags will be properly retired during ceremonies conducted this summer during Girl Scout day camps and resident camps located throughout central Indiana.
