INDIANAPOLIS — Drivers and teams turned a record number of laps on Monday, the first day of Indy 500 practice. They did so because they saw rain in the forecast for Tuesday.

Their decision to keep busy Monday was rewarded.

Bad weather canceled the second day of 500 practice before any cars could get on track.

“It’s nice to get the first day in. I think that helps us at least collect a little bit of data and figure out what direction we want to be going in,” said J.R. Hildebrand, driver of the No. 6 car. “Big scheme of things, we don’t want for it to rain all day, we don’t want for it to rain the rest of the week, but it looks like forsure we’ve got some good days ahead of us,” Hildebrand added.

“We knew the weather was probably going to be bad today. I was prepared for it, and fortunately, the amount of practice we get here is unbelievable, so I’m not too stressed about it,” said Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi.

Practice will resume at noon on Wednesday.  It’s scheduled to last until 6 PM.
