BEECH GROVE, Ind. – Beech Grove police arrested a 13-year-old boy who allegedly carjacked a mother at gunpoint.
Police were called to the 4300 block of Malden lane on May 10 around 9:20 p.m. on a report of a carjacking.
The victim had been unloading her car in this apartment parking lot while carrying her 14 month old son in her arms… a young mother got a gun stuck in her face.
“He said ‘I need your keys’ and I said ‘What?’ and he pulled out the gun and cocked it and pointed it at me and said to give him my keys,” recalled the victim. “So I gave him my keys because I had my baby in my arms.”
The victim asked not to be identified, but says the young suspect jumped behind the wheel, banged into a couple of parked cars and sped away.
“I was just shocked. My heart dropped. I was like this isn’t happening. I had the baby in my arms so I just did what he asked,” said the victim.
Days later detectives tracked the victim’s stolen car down to this apartment complex and arrested the 13-year-old suspect who lives nearby.
“It kind of shocks the mind that a 13-year-old would go to somebody with a child and carjack them,” said Beech Grove police Capt. Robert Mercuri.
Even more shocking, Beech Grove police say the same suspect is likely connected to a second attempted carjacking in Franklin Township just hours earlier.
Those crimes are also not the first run-in police have had with the suspects family.
“His brother, who is 14-years-old was arrested in March for doing the same thing. So there’s a connection that’s incredibly troubling,” said Mercuri.
The 13-year-old has been preliminarily charged with armed robbery, pointing a firearm and criminal mischief.
