Drivers to hit the track for rookie orientation, first day of practice for 100th Indy 500

SPEEDWAY, Ind. – The Grand Prix of Indianapolis was really just the warm up for the month of May as race fans get ready for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Gates at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway open to the public at 10 a.m. Monday, and drivers will hit the track for the first time. New drivers will go through rookie orientation from noon to 2 p.m. as they try to learn the lay of the land at IMS.

Indy 500 practice will then follow from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., when Indy 500 veterans will get their chance to turn a few laps at the storied venue.

Here’s the schedule for Monday:

  • 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Ticket Office Open
  • 10:00 a.m. - Gates Open
  • 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. - Rookie Orientation Program
  • 2:00 p.m. - 06:00 p.m. - Indy 500 Practice
  • 6:00 p.m. - Gates Close
