Police: Man had BAC more than 3 times legal limit during Bartholomew County crash

Steven Poindexter pleaded guilty to OWI with an alcohol concentration of .15 or more. Other charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to 2 years in the Department of Correction, with the sentence suspended except for 10 days. His license is suspended for a year and he’s on probation for 2 years.


BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. – Police said a man was driving with a blood alcohol concentration of more than three times the legal limit when he crashed his truck, trapping him inside.

Around 11 p.m. Monday, deputies with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash near 400 South just east of State Road 7. Deputies found a severely damaged pickup truck; the driver, Steven Poindexter, 46, Elizabethtown was trapped inside.

Crews from the Columbus Fire Department and Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Department worked to get Poindexter free.

Police said it appeared alcohol and illegal substances in Poindexter’s system contributed to the crash; his blood alcohol concentration tested at .269.

Poindexter suffered extensive injuries and was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital.
