INDIANAPOLIS - Bryan Lutz knew the moment had come.

Done were the sleepless nights and endless hours of homework.

But this graduation from the IUPUI Kelley School of Business would be a bit different.

"Some people might say it might kill your dating opportunities," he joked. "But I'd like to say it shows that you have a bond with your family."

The bond between mother and son for the Lutz family extended to college.

"Mom asked me, 'Why don't you stay in school?' and I asked her, 'What's keeping you from going back?'"

Bryan's mom Sharon Lutz didn't finish college the first time.

"As most newlyweds, life gets in the way," her husband Terry Lutz said.

So Bryan and Sharon decided to go to school and graduate together.

But a week-and-a-half before graduation, Bryan and Sharon were involved in a serious crash on 82nd Street near Castleton.

"Somebody turned in front of us and then we ran into a ditch," Bryan said.

Sharon suffered a broken ankle and head lacerations, forcing her to remain in the hospital on graduation day.

That's when her husband stepped in to applause Sunday afternoon, graduating in her place and wearing a cell phone to record the ceremony for Sharon to cherish as she graduated in spirit alongside her son.

"With it being Mother's Day, I can't think of a much better gift than that," Bryan said.

With their degrees, Bryan and Sharon hope to start a family business.
