CROWN POINT, Ind. – An escaped inmate from Lake County Jail was arrested Tuesday night with his girlfriend in San Antonio, Texas.
Richard Campos, 22, of East Chicago, and Elysia M. Jeronimo, 20, of Hammond, were taken into custody while trying to flee from San Antonio law enforcement, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department told The Times of Northwest Indiana.
According to the sheriff’s department, Jeronimo met with Campos in jail on April 28, and they also spoke three times on the phone on April 29. The meeting and the calls were recorded, and according to officials, Campos asked Jeronimo for help escaping the jail.
Campos went missing on Saturday, April 30 while on laundry duty at a facility across the street from the jail.
Three corrections officers are on leave pending review by the Merit Board for termination as a result of this investigation, sheriff’s spokesman Mark Back told the Times of Northwest Indiana.
The sheriff’s department scheduled a press conference for Wednesday afternoon to further discuss all of the details of the case.
