INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 10, 2016) – A community continues to heal after a young music teacher was shot during an attempted robbery in the Meridian Park neighborhood last August.

Zach Cardwell, 25, says he was loading his car for a day of teaching when three young men approached him.

Cardwell believes those men planned to rob him, but a weapon was fired right away, and Cardwell was shot the stomach.

Police never caught the suspects.

After several surgeries and many months of healing, Cardwell is now back to performing and teaching music full time.

On Sunday, neighbors and friends hosted a benefit concert to help pay for his medical bills, but Cardwell says the event is about much more than that.

“Raising money for my medical bills and lost income is secondary to the idea that our neighborhood is going to fight back, joining the current fight against violence,” Cardwell said.

“Along the way, Zach has shown us a lot of courage and grace and forgiveness and really he’s taught us a lot,” said Lee Smith, event organizer and family friend.

Those who attended Sunday’s benefit concert were asked to bring a $10 donation.
