DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (April 6, 2016) — Officials say a La Porte, Indiana man drowned and his 12-year-old son was rescued from the ocean in Daytona Beach Shores Tuesday.

The Volusia County Beach Safety says someone called 911 after being concerned about how far the father, Craig Molenda , 58, and the child were from shore.

Beach safety officials say lifeguards were able to bring the child to shore around 2:15 p.m. They say rescuers had to use a ski to get the father, who was about 300 yards from shore.

He was unresponsive when he was placed in an ambulance. Beach safety officials say he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy on the father and a preliminary investigation deemed his death an accidental drowning.
