CAMBY, Ind. (April 4, 2016)-- Police responded to a fatal shooting Monday evening in Camby.
The shooting occurred before 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Rancho Grande restaurant located in the 8300 block of Windfall Lane.
According to police, a man shot his wife in the leg and head before fatally shooting himself. They had an argument about a pending domestic violence case in a car before shots were fired.
Monday afternoon those who worked in the usually quiet Heartland Crossing shopping center were stunned, as it became a crime scene.
“We work three doors down. It’s terrifying. Nothing like this ever happens around here,” said Sara Grayson.
Investigators said the woman was shot twice.
“They were having a dispute inside the vehicle. He shot her once she was inside the vehicle, then once that was completed, he got out of the vehicle, walked around to the front of the vehicle, and that’s when he shot himself,” said Capt. Amanda Goings, with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department.
Goings said the woman was in stable condition as of Monday night and talking to detectives. She was taken to Eskenazi Hospital after the shooting.
“She is very fortunate, very fortunate,” Goings said.
Authorities said they still aren’t sure of a motive behind the violence, but the husband and wife were embroiled in a domestic dispute, with a no-contact order in effect.
“My understanding is part of the dispute was over a pending domestic violence case between them. There was a no-contact order in place, and for whatever reason, they decided to meet here for a conversation, and it did not end well,” she said, “We are thankful that the situation was contained to a rather small area, and nobody else was hurt. Thank goodness for that.”
Names of those involved have not been released, as family members are still being notified.
