Mayor Joe Hogsett swears in IMPD Chief Troy Riggs.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 4, 2016) – New IMPD Chief Troy Riggs was officially sworn in Monday. Chief Riggs took office on January 1 and had a six-month window to get police certification in Indiana.

He’s a former Director of Public Safety in Indy, and he served in law enforcement in Kentucky and Texas.

Mayor Joe Hogsett called it a great day for Indianapolis.

“Chief Riggs brings with him decades of law enforcement experience as well as a dedication to building a modern, responsive police force here in Indianapolis,” Mayor Hogsett said. “Under the Chief’s leadership, IMPD will focus on a data-driven approach to policing and increased communication with our neighborhoods, ushering in an era of improved public safety and greater community trust.”

Riggs pledged after being sworn in to put more officers on the street, and expressed the need for more community interaction. His goal, he said, is to reduce crime and fear of crime while enhancing public safety.

“One of the things I talked about in December was getting IMPD in a place where they can engage the community more and enhance the quality of life and public safety,” Chief Riggs said. “We want to ensure the Mayor’s vision for public safety is implemented, we are targeting the right offenders and using data to direct resources. Everything we are doing with IMPD is about building a foundation for the future – we are in this for the long haul.”
