Report: Hackers steal data of 1.5 million Verizon Enterprise customers
(March 26, 2016) – According to a report, more than 1.5 million customers of Verizon’s anti-hacker unit have fallen victim to a hacker.
Verizon Enterprise Solutions is a division of Verizon Communications that helps Fortune 500 companies respond to some of the world’s largest data breaches, according to Brian Kreps of KrebsOnSecurity.
On Thursday, Krebs reported that a well-known member of a cybercrime forum posted a thread on an underground website offering to sell the info of 1.5 million Verizon Enterprise customers for $100,000. The cybercriminal also offered to share the vulnerabilities he found on Verizon’s website for a price.
Verizon told Krebs that the company recently identified a security flaw that allowed hackers to steal customers’ contact information, and they’re currently in the process of alerting affected customers.
“Verizon recently discovered and remediated a security vulnerability on our enterprise client portal. Our investigation to date found an attacker obtained basic contact information on a number of our enterprise customers. No customer proprietary network information (CPNI) or other data was accessed or accessible,” Verizon said in an emailed statement.
Customers don’t have to worry about identity theft or credit card fraud since only basic contact information was stolen, but according to Krebs, those customers could be easy targets for phishing and other targeted attacks.
Verizon wants to emphasize that no data about consumer customers was involved.
