Officer shoots armed robbery suspect on city’s west side

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 24, 2016) -- Police confirm one person is in serious condition after a police action shooting on the city's west side early Thursday morning.

Police were dispatched to the 6800 block of West Washington Street on reports of an armed robbery at a Thorntons gas station.

When the suspect description from that robbery was broadcast over the IMPD police scanner, officers at a nearby apartment complex in the 1400 block of Panama Avenue saw two men who matched the description.

Police say when officers approached the suspects to question them, one drew a gun from his waistband. According to police, one of the officers fired his weapon once, striking one of the suspects.

The injured suspect was transported to Eskenazi in serious condition.

According to officials, the second suspect fled and was caught a short time later after K9 officers and an IMPD helicopter located him. He was taken into custody without incident.

No injuries were reported during the armed robbery of the gas station.
