IMPD arrests man wanted for shooting at officer

UPDATE:

Michael Swafford was found guilty of attempted murder, resisting law enforcement, and a habitual sentencing enhancement. He was later sentenced to 55 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.

ORIGINAL STORY:

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 20, 2016) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police have arrested a man wanted for shooting an IMPD officer earlier this month.

31-year-old Michael Swafford was arrested at a gas station on the 3500 block of Kentucky Avenue Saturday night. He was taken into custody without incident. Narcotics and a .50 caliber handgun were found during a search. Swafford has also been charged with Carrying a Handgun Without a License With a Prior Conviction, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Marijuana.

Swafford was wanted on an outstanding warrant for Attempted Murder after shooting at Officer Christopher Maher during a vehicle pursuit. Officer Maher was most likely hit by flying glass from his driver’s side window. His injuries were minor.
