LAWRENCE, Ind. (March 17, 2016) – Lawrence police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash as a homicide.

The 38-year-old victim died after crashing his motorcycle around 2 o’clock Thursday morning on East 46th street near I-465.

The victim crashed his motorcycle down a grassy embankment and died after being rushed to the hospital.

After further exams, police realized the victim had been shot twice and it was the gunshots that actually took the man’s life.

“It was crazy. I woke up this morning and was told he was gone,” said one of the victim’s friends Ramirez Hayes.

After the sun came up, Hayes visited the scene and put up a small memorial to honor his friend, but Ramirez and several other neighbors didn’t know the victim had been shot twice before the crash, until we told them.

“I’m still trying to puzzle the pieces together. That was news to me since y’all told me,” said Hayes.

The victim is identified at 38-year-old Shawn Green.

His friends called him “Cheese” because he always had a smile on his face.

“He loved to ride motorcycles and that’s why I’m out here. He was a fellow rider,” said Hayes.

“The cause of death was gunshot wounds and not the result of the crash,” said Lawrence police deputy chief Gary Woodruff.

While Lawrence police know how the victim died, they don’t know if Green got shot while driving or even where the shooting took place.

“The motorcycle crash that occurred was a result of the victim being shot prior to the crash. We don’t know where that occurred. It’s definitely a very active investigation right now,” said Woodruff.

So far no arrests have been made.

Hayes just hopes someone comes forward to explain what happened to his friend.

“Hearing he was shot is crazy because he don’t do nothing. He don’t bother nobody. To have this happen to a person that didn’t do anything but ride bikes and take care of his kids and grandkids, this is crazy,” said Hayes.

Lawrence police had no suspect information to release at this point.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lawrence police or Crime Stoppers.
