BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (March 9, 2016) – A Boone County deputy was suspended without pay for two days following an accidental discharge of an off duty firearm in the Boone County Courthouse.

The incident occurred on February 5 at 11:30 a.m. Deputy R.T. Krise brought a .32 caliber Beretta Tomcat pistol into the courthouse and displayed the firearm to a potential buyer in the former Prosecutor’s Office/ Division of Child Support office.

During this transaction the firearm discharged into a wall inside of the unoccupied office.

The Firearms Review Board convened, reviewed the facts and made a recommendation to Sheriff Nielsen. Deputy Krise was suspended for two days without pay and is required to take continued firearms training.

“We are all human beings and we make mistakes.  In this case a veteran deputy made a mistake and I made a mistake of not releasing the information.  It is important to me to abide by the laws of the state of the Indiana and the laws of the constitution of the United States.  In this case, further review of the statutes allowed me the opportunity to gain more knowledge in understanding of the public access laws that relate to personnel matters,” said Sheriff Mike Nielsen commented.
