Gas station manager finds credit card skimmer on pump in Hancock County
HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. (March 9, 2016) – A manager at a Hancock County gas station found a credit card skimmer on a pump, the latest example of the problem in central Indiana.
According to Capt. Jeff Rasche with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, the skimmer device was found inside a gas pump Tuesday at the Shell Circle K gas station at the Mt. Comfort Road and Interstate 70 interchange.
The manager was inspecting the pump after a rash of problems with credit card skimmers in central Indiana. Rasche said the pump was checked Friday, and investigators believe someone installed it over the weekend.
Workers at the gas station plan to check all pumps three times a day to see if someone has tampered with them.
In this case, the skimmer was found on a single pump located far away from the view of the on-duty clerk.
Investigators will download information from the device to help them figure out when it was installed and match it with surveillance footage to identify a suspect.
