Fraudulent text messages sent out, bank alerts customers

GREENSBURG, Ind. (Feb. 26, 2016) – If you received a text message from Main Source bank asking for your personal information, bank representatives warn not to click on it.

“It’s a pretty obvious looking text, it’s unusual,” said Carrie Stapp, senior vice president director of marketing for Main Source bank, headquartered in Greensburg. “It’s suspicious looking.”

Thousands of people may have received the text message appearing to have come from Main Source Bank, but the problem is the bank didn’t send the message. In fact, they say they never send active links via text message.

“These are fraudsters that have collected random cell phone numbers from people throughout our communities and they’re sending it regardless of them being a Main Source Bank customer or not,” said Stapp.

The scammers are trying to trick you into giving away your personal information. They steal the bank’s logo, then redirect you to a false website. Once there, you’re asked for anything from your password to your social security number.

The first report of these text messages came in Tuesday morning. Stapp says the phone numbers seem focused, but random.

“We first received reports of it in Columbus, Indiana, and then it spread into Greensburg and then Batesville and then a little bit further south,” said Stapp.

But whether you’re a Main Source customer or not, bottom line is to be alert.

“Be vigilant about what you’re receiving because tomorrow it could be any bank name they’re putting in,” said Stapp. “It seems pretty random at this point.”

Main Source Bank representative say they typically see a rise in these types of scams at this time of year because it is tax season.

If you did receive one of these text messages, calling your bank immediately is advised.
