Suspect arrested after stealing van, crashing during chase
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 25, 2016) – A car thief didn’t get very far after stealing a vehicle from an Indianapolis convenience store Thursday morning.
The owner of a gold minivan left it running and went inside the store. At that point, the 28-year-old suspect got into the van and took off.
The van’s owner called police and contacted the insurance company because the vehicle has a GPS tracking device on it through the company. A family member picked up the van’s owner and followed the stolen vehicle via the GPS tracker. Police eventually located the van, marking the start of a short pursuit.
The van hit a parked car and an IMPD squad car before going off the road into a field. The suspect was arrested near South Pershing Avenue and Howard Street.
During his arrest, the suspected car thief said he needed money because his mother was dying and his brother was in jail, saying he’d “do what I got to do to survive.”
