INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 5, 2016) — A man who believed he spotted his uncle’s stolen car chased after it, leading to a crash and reports of shots fired that stopped interstate traffic on the west side of Indianapolis.

INDOT cameras showed traffic stopped on 465 near 46th Street on Friday afternoon.

According to Indiana State Police, the man, identified as Pablo Rodriguez, 28, said his uncle’s car was stolen Wednesday. He spotted it Friday afternoon on 38th Street and began pursuing it. Witnesses reported seeing the man waving a gun while driving and chasing after it. Witnesses told police shots were fired, although police said they couldn’t confirm that.

The pursuit continued on the interstate to 465 northbound, and Rodriguez intentionally crashed into the other car near West 46th Street. He then held the driver of the stolen car, identified as Andre Edwards, 21, Indianapolis, at gunpoint until police could arrive. Edwards has an outstanding warrant in Marion County for armed robbery and a second outstanding warrant out of Georgia for aggravated assault.

Both men were taken to Eskenazi Hospital for examination while police try to sort out the situation. The northbound lanes were closed for several minutes, backing traffic up on the west side.
