LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (February 3, 2016) – An Indiana man who was allegedly on the run after being accused of torturing a dog was apprehended by US Marshals in Texas on Sunday.

According to FOX28, US Marshals arrested Richard Cope, 50, in El Paso, Texas. He faces one felony count of torturing an animal, and three misdemeanor counts of cruelty to an animal. Cope will be brought back to LaPorte County once extradition is waived from the state of Texas.

The investigation began on Christmas Day when a four-month-old Pitbull was found wandering outside with his snout bound shut with electrical tape. He was badly beaten, and both of his hips were broken.

The dog was taken to the Guardians of the Green Mile animal shelter to receive care, and he was named “Chance Christmas.” The group featured Chance on their Facebook page, and they raised thousands of dollars for the surgeries he so desperately needed. They also raised $1,000 for a reward to help finding Cope.

According to the group, Chance is doing much better, and he is very happy in his foster home! He should be ready for adoption in the near future.
