CUMBERLAND, Ind. (January 16, 2016) – “The vehicle, the clothing, and we have some other evidence that we need to look at,” says Cumberland Police Chief Michael Crooke.
Chief Crooke believes Kiree Hayes, 23, who has a long criminal record and two juveniles ages 16 and 17 are the ones who tried to rob the Cumberland Express Mart Friday night before shooting and killing the clerk. Dozens of security cameras caught the would-be robbers' every move, even their voices.
“When you talk about the clarity of the video and the voices on the video, the two witnesses we are very confident that they nailed it on descriptions,” says Chief Crooke.
Cumberland Police won’t release the video because you can see two witnesses in the tape. One of them is a 19-year-old girl who was standing right next to the clerk when he was shot and killed. We spoke exclusively to her family about what she witnessed.
“After they left, she crawled over to him and tried to stop the bleeding, but it was too late. She says she will never forget the voice or the whites of their eyes,” says the witness’s family member.
The family says the teen watched in horror as two masked men carrying guns walked into the Cumberland Express Mart and shot and killed "Monte” Singh, 24, during an attempted armed robbery.
“Before he could even hang up, boom it happened,” says the family member.
After killing the clerk, they demanded the teen, who was only on her first day of training as a cashier, open the register.
“Jumped up on the counter and told her to open the cash register door, and she said she did not know how,” says the family member.
With Singh dead on the floor and a gun pointed at her, the family says she did not think she would make it out alive. But the men took off running without hurting her. A potentially big break in the case came a few hours later when IMPD caught three men of the same description driving the same car who robbed Rich Oil on Brookville road. They are now in IMPD custody. While they are not charged with the deadly robbery, Cumberland Police feel confident Singh’s killers are no longer on the run.
“As you know, we are keeping our fingers crossed,” says Chief Crooke.
