After multiple off-campus robberies, IUPUI police increase patrols
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (December 16, 2015) – IUPUI police are increasing patrols after multiple armed robberies were reported Tuesday off-campus.
One day after the robberies, campus police could be seen circling the streets surrounding the university. IUPUI police said they hope an increased visibility will help deter suspects from using campus as an escape route.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) said they’re not taking these robberies lightly.
“Due to the fact that our suspect, at least initially, took off and ran towards campus, armed with a handgun, shortly after the robbery, heightened our level of situational awareness,” said IMPD Lt. Richard Riddle.
Lt. Riddle said while these situations are rare, they are still taking it seriously and continue to search for suspects.
“To see somebody go south through the complex and towards the campus is unique. It doesn’t happen very often, but it caught our attention,” said Lt. Riddle.
IMPD said they are linking all three robberies together because of the timing, location, and similar description of suspects.
IUPUI police said they will continue to have an increased police presence even through winter break.
