Police: Intoxicated Seymour man arrested after battering girlfriend, baby at mall
COLUMBUS, Ind. (Dec. 2, 2015) – Columbus police said a highly intoxicated Seymour man battered his girlfriend and baby at a shopping mall Monday night.
Officers were dispatched around 7:15 p.m. to the 2200 block of 25th Street in response to the disturbance. Police tried to talk to Dustin M. Keefer, 27, about the incident, but Keefer ran to the mall parking lot. Officers caught him a short time later.
A portable breath test showed Keefer had a blood alcohol content of 0.324, police said.
A witness reported hearing someone screaming for help in the parking lot and saw Keefer strike a woman while she held their 2-month-old child. His girlfriend later told police Keefer had been drinking all day and threw a cigarette lighter that hit the baby in the head. After that, she said she and Keefer got into an argument; he dragged the child out of her car seat by tugging on her leg.
Keefer was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital before going to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, public intoxication, neglect of a dependent, battery and domestic battery in the presence of a minor.
The baby was released into the custody of her mother.
