Andrew Luck

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (November 30, 2015) – Chuck Pagano fields perhaps hundreds of questions from the media every week. On Monday, he got one he apparently felt very strongly about.

“I’m not even gonna… That’s ludicrous, to be honest with you,” Pagano answered from his podium at Colts’ headquarters.

The answer was a bit surprising mostly because the question didn’t seem that ludicrous: How seriously does the coaching staff consider leaving a backup in the starting lineup when the starter returns from injury if that backup is performing well? The question also referenced Matt Hasselbeck’s strong performance while Andrew Luck has been out, and the reporter even prefaced the question by saying “I know that’s not gonna happen. I know Luck’s your starting quarterback.”

Well, Pagano still didn’t take kindly to the line of questioning.

“That’s ludicrous.”

(The reporter, IndyStar Colts’ beat reporter Stephen Holder, wrote about the exchange here).

If simply proposing the question is as ludicrous as Pagano would have you believe, then what does he think about ESPN Monday Night Football announcer Mike Tirico describing the Colts’ upcoming decision as “stressful” and “tough” on Russilo and Kannell (at the 11 minute mark of this audio track)?

“You gotta stay off Twitter,” Pagano continued. “I don’t want to disrespect anybody. Quit listening to… get your blinders and your earmuffs on.”

That last line drew a laugh from the assembled reporters at Colts’ headquarters, as that line is a typical Pagano-ism, referring to his team blocking out any outside criticism or noise and just playing football. Still, one more question on the starting quarterback prompted a more direct answer from Pagano.

“Andrew is our starting quarterback and when he is healthy and he is 100 percent healthy and the doctors and our trainers say he is ready to roll then he is going to be under center.”
