Monrovia wins first ever state title in 33-6 romp over Whiting

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Dalton Smith rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns and Jaden Rhea finished with 122 rushing yards and two touchdowns as Monrovia defeated Whiting 33-6 to claim the Class 2A state football championship.

Third-ranked Monrovia took a close game at the half and blew it open by outscoring No. 6 Whiting 19-0 in Saturday’s final two quarters.

The Bulldogs’ (14-1) offense finished with 373 yards on the ground, the fourth most in a state finals game. Monrovia racked up 6,368 rushing yards for the season.

Monrovia coach Kevin Hutchins said after his team’s win that “it’s a great feeling.”

Whiting quarterback Stuart Glascow finished 12-of-25 for 137 yards but threw two interceptions. The Oilers (13-2) capped a season that ended with their first state football finals appearance.
