INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – There are serious health warnings for anyone that takes dietary supplements. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that more than 100 manufacturers of these dietary supplements are potentially unsafe. Now, these companies are facing potential criminal charges.

JACK3D and OxyElite Pro supplements are being examined by the FBI and the FDA for falsely marketing their products. Authorities say both products claim to have natural plant extracts, but actually contain synthetic stimulants.

“You might not know what the ingredients are in the supplements you are taking,” says IU Health dietitian Anna King.

Dietitians say these supplements are making false guarantees.

“They are promising miracles to happen and they are probably not going to happen, or if they do they are not happening in a healthy way,” says King.

Both products allegedly contain the amphetamine like stimulant DMAA. The full name is Dimethylamine.

“You’re reading through the ingredients and there are things that you are not able to pronounce or understand, then probably not the best idea to take them,” says King.

The health impacts could be severe, ranging from heart palpitations to liver damage as the most common.

“Depending on what the ingredients are they could cause some issues with your liver or kidney. So, you really want to be careful with these ingredients that you are putting in your body,” says King.
