15-year-old boy injured in shooting while hunting in Jay County
JAY COUNTY, Ind. (Nov. 18, 2015)— A 15-year-old boy was accidentally shot by his friend while they were hunting deer in Jay County.
Indiana Conservation Officers responded to the scene in the 1600 block of N 600 E in Portland, Ind. just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.
Authorities said the two teenagers were hunting together and decided to split up in the woods. They say a deer jumped up and ran in between the two hunters. The 16 year old took a shot at the running deer, accidentally striking the victim in the left leg near his knee.
The boy was taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne with non life-threatening injuries.
Officers say both hunters were properly licensed and completed hunter education.
