IKEA proposes Indiana location in fall 2017, bringing 250 jobs to Fishers

FISHERS, Ind. (Nov. 10, 2015) – Word quickly spread online when news spread about a proposed IKEA coming to Central Indiana.

Tuesday morning, company and city leaders confirmed the proposal, that IKEA wants to build its 42nd store in the United States in Fishers. The proposed site sits off I-69 near 116th Street.

“I think this is a big win for the city of Fishers today,” Mayor Scott Fadness said during a news conference at Fishers City Hall auditorium. “This is a big win for the entire central Indiana region.”

Company officials said the 296,000-square-foot store would cover 35 acres and include 1,000 parking spaces, adding the store would add about 250 jobs in customer service, food, service, sales and accounting.

“We have more than 184,000 customers already here in Central Indiana so we think it’s a great market for us,” Joseph Roth said, public affairs manager for IKEA. “Typically IKEA stores, we purchase large pieces of land with good visibility and access along the interstate. And that’s what we found right here.”

During the next several months, the company will need economic and zoning approval from the Fishers City Council for the store to become a reality. Company and city officials have been negotiating the project’s details for some time.

Fadness said the city is considering waiving the impact fees for the project, given the projected investment from IKEA is about $40 million.

“I know this city council is very thoughtful,” Fadness said. “They’re pro-economic development, but they’re going to make sure whatever gets built here is in the manner which citizens can be proud of.”

The project coincides with major construction expected along I-69 near the proposed site during the next two years, which is meant to ease traffic congestion and entice development.

“They’re fully supportive of the road work we’re going to do,” Fadness aid. “They are sensitive we get the work done in time so it doesn’t bother with them opening their front doors.”

Company officials said they hope to officially purchase the land by next summer pending government approval and break ground next fall.

“This is definitely a destination location,” Tim Monger said, president of the Hamilton County Economic Development Corporation. “So from a tourism standpoint, visitors standpoint, it’s very significant.”
