CHICAGO, IL (November 8, 2015) – The mother of a 9-year-old boy who was fatally shot and killed just a few days ago in Chicago has received lots of criticism from people on social media.

Police say Tyshawn Lee was “lured” from a nearby park and fatally shot because of his father’s alleged gang ties.

But according to WGN-TV, Karla Lee purchased a new car just a few days after her son’s murder, and a flurry of people on social media criticized her and accused her of using money from her son’s GoFundMe account to buy the car. Lee says she used her own money.

Karla posted several videos to Instagram Saturday morning, defending her purchase. The videos have been deleted, but according to WGN-TV, she said she bought the car because she was afraid of being targeted if she took public transportation.

The family raised nearly $17,500 through a GoFundMe account that was reportedly created by one of Karla’s friends “to help her lay her son to rest.”
