CARMEL, Ind., (October 30, 2015) It is a major setback for a highly anticipated road project in Carmel.

The city says it was not awarded the money from a competitive federal grant they hoping to use to improve the intersection of 96th and Keystone Parkway.

The entire project costs about 32-million dollars. Carmel was seeking  $19.4 Million from the grant to green light the project, but now the city will have to explore other funding options to make up the difference.

The city says the intersection project is a top priority. Not only will it enhance the city’s front door into Hamilton County it will improve traffic flow and reduce accidents significantly.

“Between 2012 and the end of 2014, accidents actually increased by 22% and accidents with injury actually went up by 45%,” said City of Carmel Engineer, Jeremy Kashman.

The City of Carmel says 600 applications were submitted to the federal grant, only 39 applicants were awarded funds.

Kashman says the project will happen- it’s just a question of when.

The project is expected to take two years to complete, the intersection will remain open during construction.
