Kentucky school district closes for third straight day amid manhunt

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (October 28, 2015) — A Kentucky school district has closed for the third day in a row.as authorities search for a fugitive accused of shooting at law officers in two states.

Kentucky police are searching for Floyd Ray Cook, 62. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder in Tennessee for allegedly shooting and wounding a police officer Saturday. Authorities say the officer’s life was saved by his bulletproof vest.

He is also accused of opening fire later Saturday at a Kentucky trooper. Fortunately the trooper wasn’t wounded.

Cooke is believed to be on foot, and he was last seen in the hilly, wooded countryside in Cumberland County. Cumberland County is about four hours south of Indianapolis.

The superintendent of Cumberland County schools made the decision on Wednesday to close the school district for the third straight day. Superintendent Kirk Biggerstaff said he doesn’t want student waiting for buses in sparsely-populated areas while Cook is still at large.
