Walmart shoplifting suspect steals Lawrence squad car, family member turns her into police

LAWRENCE, Ind. (October 15, 2015) – Lawrence police arrested a Walmart shoplifting suspect who stole a squad car Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to a report of shoplifting at the Walmart at Pendleton Pike and German Church Road around 3:20 p.m.

Lawrence Police took a female shoplifting suspect, later identified as Heather Johnson, 21, of Brownsburg, into custody. An officer handcuffed Johnson and fastened her seat belt. He then walked back to the trunk of the car.

When he closed trunk, he saw that Johnson had gotten into driver’s seat, and she drove away.

She drove about a mile east. She ditched the car near 65th Street and Paradise Court and called a family member. That family member came to pick her up, and then turned her in to police. Johnson is back in custody.

Johnson is facing several charges including escape, auto theft, resisting law enforcement, and theft.
