Police: Man took car for drunken joyride before threatening deputy
COLUMBUS, Ind. (Oct. 15, 2015) – A Columbus man claimed he was an employee when he took a vehicle for a spin at a car lot, but he was no such thing.
And when police showed up, he threatened them, investigators say.
Around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, investigators from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department arrived at Don’s Auto Sales, 880 Jonesville Road, Columbus, after someone reported a suspicious person there.
Deputies found a man had gotten into a vehicle and driven it around the parking lot. The vehicle’s owner removed the man, identified as Gilberto Mungia, 64, from the car. Mungia told deputies he worked at the business, but the owner said Mungia wasn’t an employee there.
During the investigation, Mungia, who appeared to be intoxicated, threatened multiple times to harm one of the deputies.
He was arrested on numerous charges, including attempted car theft, criminal trespass, intimidation of a law enforcement officer and public intoxication. He was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail.
