GREENFIELD, Ind. (October 4, 2015) – Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a treestand accident that resulted in the death of a Greenfield man.

Around 10:25 p.m. Saturday night, units from multiple agencies were dispatched to the area of 5300 South 575 East in Greenfield to assist with locating a hunter that failed to return home.

Upon arriving on scene and executing a search of the area, the body of the missing hunter was located a short time later by a deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and a trooper with the Indiana State Police.

The hunter has been identified as Robert D. Smith, 59, of Greenfield.

Initial investigation reveals that Smith was attempting to remove a treestand from an apparent rotten and dead tree.  While doing this, the tree broke at the base causing Smith to fall from a height of approximately 18 feet.

It appears the accident took place at least 4 hours prior to Smith being located.

Smith was not utilizing any type of safety harness or equipment.

No foul play is suspected in this case.
