(September 18, 2015) – A sweet picture of a Bloomington police officer and a homeless man is going viral.

According to the Bloomington Police Facebook Page, Officer Jeff Alwine encountered an individual on Kirkwood Avenue who had lost his shoes and was in “crisis”.

The officer spent time talking to him, his shoes were located, and he was able to reconnect him with his family.

Officer Alwine is one of six BPD Downtown Resource Officers (DRO’s) who deal with those experiencing homelessness and others who frequent the downtown area and local parks that have other issues that may have derailed their lives.

The DRO’s work closely with social service agencies, medical facilities, and mental health treatment providers in an effort to connect those who need help with the services that can provide it.

The Bloomington Police Department reported on their page, “As you can see from the image, it all begins with the willingness and ability to communicate. Patience and caring are also critical attributes of the position.”
