INDIANAPOLIS, Ind (Sep. 8, 2015)-- An Indianapolis woman was attacked in the middle of the night by a man with an ax, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.

Ceci Groce fought back tears as she looked at pictures of her daughter Autumn Lopez.  While Groce attempts to focus on the better times, she can't help think about the struggle her daughter is going through.

Currently, Lopez is recovering at Eskenazi Hospital and is almost unrecognizable.

"She has a black eye, a broken jaw, the bones inside her ear canal are broken," Groce said of her daughter's injuries.

Lopez said an ex-boyfriend and the father of two of her kids broke into her northwest side apartment as she slept early Friday morning. Lopez told police he attacked her with an ax. Indianapolis Metropolitan police identified the man as Servdriano Diaz-Ortiz.

"She looked at him right in the eye as he brought the ax down," said Groce.

"She was able to block it like this to keep it from penetrating her brain but it went through her skull," said Groce.

In a scramble for her life, Lopez ran from the apartment and started banging on neighbor Darlene Rodriguez's door.

"She was screaming for help and when someone screams for help, instincts tell you to go help them and see what’s going on," said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez rushed in action and comforted her badly injured neighbor.  She waited with Lopez until paramedics arrived.

"I went and got a blanket and put it over her to cover her up because she was all bloody," said Rodriguez.

Family member said Diaz-Ortiz's attack was fueled by jealously.

"The only way he can get forgiveness from God or anyone else is if he turns himself in," said Groce.

IMPD said a domestic violence detective investigated the case. Police issued a warrant for attempted murder and burglary against Diaz-Ortiz on the day of the assault. Anyone with information should call 911 or Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Lopez and her family with the expensive medical bills.
